Commercial and Trucking Policy Limits Search

Liability limits behind a business, a fleet or a for-hire trucking carrier, searched by business name, USDOT number, VIN or crash report.

Why commercial coverage is harder to find

A commercial policy is usually layered, and the information is harder to find than on a personal auto policy. A crash involving a company vehicle, a delivery driver, a fleet or a for-hire carrier may involve a primary liability policy, one or more excess layers and, sometimes, a separate policy for the driver or the vehicle owner. We look for the primary liability policy limits and, where we can, additional coverage above them.

Vehicles and operations we search

Our commercial work centers on for-hire motor carriers that can be identified by a USDOT number, including trucking companies and fleets. For other commercial or premises matters, send the details and we will confirm whether we can search before any work begins.

Primary, excess and umbrella layers

Excess and umbrella policies can add significant limits above the primary layer, and the defendant may not mention them. Tell us if you suspect more than one layer. Where the information allows, we note what we find. A report that shows no excess coverage should not be read as proof that none exists; asking the carrier directly, where your state requires disclosure, is how you confirm it. Our guide explains how to find umbrella and excess coverage in an injury case.

What we need from you

  • The business name and, if you have it, the USDOT or MC number
  • The vehicle, plate or VIN, and any unit number
  • The accident report
  • The date and location of loss
  • Your firm name and a case reference

What the report shows

The report lists the policies we located and the policy limit shown for each, the carrier and any policy details we could identify, and notes on anything we could not confirm, such as multiple carriers or unmatched units. It is delivered by email. It is research, not a declarations page, and it does not confirm coverage on a specific date of loss.

Pricing and turnaround

Pricing is quoted before work begins. Commercial searches usually take longer than a personal auto search, and timing depends on what you send. For urgent matters, ask for rush handling. See Pricing.
