Policy Limit Search Services

Trace Policy Limits researches the liability insurance coverage behind a defendant so attorneys can evaluate a case before formal discovery. Choose the search that fits the claim, or send the case details and we will tell you which one applies.

Our searches

Each service has its own page with the details we need and what you can expect back. Pricing is quoted before work begins, and turnaround depends on the search type and the details you send.

Which search do I need?

Most cases need one search. If a case could fit two, send it once and say so in the notes, and we will tell you what we recommend before we start.

Other coverage questions

Homeowners, renters and premises claims, umbrella and excess policies, and cases where you know the defendant but not the insurer come up often. They are not separate products on this site. Tell us about the claim on the request form and we will confirm whether we can search it before any work begins. For background, read our guide to finding umbrella and excess coverage.

You may also see this kind of work called policy limit discovery, policy limits trace or liability limit tracing. It is the same research.

What every request needs

  • Defendant's full name (and business name for commercial matters)
  • Date and location of loss
  • Anything that identifies the vehicle, property or policy: plate, VIN, address, policy number, carrier
  • The accident report, if you have it
  • Your firm name and a case reference

What a search does not do

A report is research, not a policy document. We do not provide certified policies, and a report should not be treated as the carrier's confirmation of coverage. Where your state gives claimants a right to request limits from the insurer, send that request too. See our guide to pre-suit policy limits disclosure by state.

Ready to send a case?

The more you send, the more specific the result. Missing details are the most common reason a search takes longer or comes back partial.

Have a defendant and a date of loss?

Send us the case details and we will confirm what we need to start. Questions first? Email request@tracepolicylimits.com.
